When I received my referral for Dr. Naeem, it took one month to schedule the consult. After the consult, it took one month to schedule my colonoscopy. Dr. Naeem would do the colonoscopy out of Theda Oaks (if I understand the relationship correctly, several doctors "contract" the services of the Theda Oaks for pre-op, facilities, etc).

I was contacted the day before my procedure by Theda Oaks. I informed them I had a positive COVID-19 test. It had been 14 days since my test, and 21 days since the onset of symptoms. By all CDC standards, I should have been considered non-contagious. The person who called verified with someone else on staff and said I was good to go.

I arrived for my appointment 30 minutes earlier as requested. I again had to explain my situation, the gentleman doing the screening went and talked with someone else, came back and said I was good to go. I was taken back 45 minutes after my appointment time.

I was again interviewed by a nurse. I had to explain for the third time my situation. She said ok. I was in a gown, on a gurney, with an IV in my arm waiting to go back for the procedure. It was at this point that Dr. Naeem's anesthesia nurse came and informed me that Dr. Naeem refused to do the procedure. I was furious. I understand that COVID-19 is scary, somewhat unpredictable, and new information is being discovered all the time. If Dr. Naeem chooses to err on the side of caution and hold stricter standards than recommended by the CDC, that is his choice. However, he should have a conversation with the people he contracts to do his pre-op assessments and phone calls and ensure they understand his policies.

Dr. Naeem's nurse informed me that if I could go get a another COVID-19 test done and show a negative result, he was willing to do it the next day. So their "fix" for the situation was for me to go to an urgent care facility that had rapid tests available, pay for an office visit and a test, in the hopes that it would come back negative (even though current recommendations are to wait 90 days before retesting, as you will likely still be positive). And if perchance I was negative, go another 24 hours with no food on a clear liquid diet.

Bottom line, I was extremely unhappy with the whole thing. The folks at Theda Oaks tried to smooth things over and get the procedure done, but they have no ability to tell the Dr. what to do; they are support staff. I would encourage Theda Oaks to be a little more pro-active and ensure they have the Doctors' current policies on hand. This will just help protect them, and it will be value added to the patients and doctors that they support.
