If there is a place where tradition, craftsmanship, and warm hospitality meet in perfect harmony, it is without doubt Casa Ysla Pastelería-Cafetería. Situated in the heart of Andalusia and with a legacy that dates back to 1897, Casa Ysla is far more than a café or bakery—it is a custodian of local heritage and a celebration of Granada’s iconic sweet treat: the Pionono.

From the moment you enter, there’s a sense of old-world charm blended beautifully with a modern café atmosphere. Whether you’re dropping in for a quick cortado or planning to immerse yourself in the full sweet experience, the ambiance immediately draws you in—warm-toned interiors, an elegant display of pastries, and the subtle aroma of freshly brewed coffee and vanilla-laced sponge.

The Pionono Experience
Let’s talk about what everyone comes for—the Pionono. This miniature cylindrical cake is a soft, moist sponge delicately soaked in syrup, rolled, and crowned with a lightly torched cream that adds a whisper of caramelised smokiness. It’s small enough to be eaten in a bite or two, but rich enough to linger in your memory long after. Casa Ysla’s version is, quite simply, the gold standard. You taste not only skill, but tradition—each one hand-finished with meticulous care. Whether you’re a first-timer or a loyal local, there’s a reverence in the way it’s presented and enjoyed.

More Than Just Piononos
While the Pionono is undoubtedly the star, Casa Ysla’s broader offering deserves just as much recognition. Their tarta de queso is creamy, smooth, and well-balanced—not overly sweet, allowing the cheese to shine. The palmeras are flaky, glossy, and perfectly caramelised. Their coffee is locally roasted and expertly poured, creating the ideal partner to any pastry. Breakfast offerings are simple but done with quality—fresh baguettes, jamón, tomatoes, and golden olive oil served with pride and efficiency.

Service and Atmosphere
The staff at Casa Ysla exude the kind of quiet confidence that comes from generations of experience. They are polite, knowledgeable, and happy to guide visitors through the menu or explain the history of the Pionono. Even at busy times, there is an unhurried grace in the way service is delivered—a rare trait that speaks volumes about the team’s pride in what they do.

The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, attracting everyone from tourists seeking an authentic taste of Granada to locals on their daily ritual. You’ll see elderly couples sharing a nostalgic treat, students refuelling between classes, and families introducing their children to a generational favorite.

A Note on Heritage and Legacy
It’s worth noting that Casa Ysla is not just a café—it’s a living piece of Andalusian culinary history. Its roots in Santa Fe, and its continued reputation across multiple locations, show how well it has preserved its core identity while growing gracefully with time. To visit Casa Ysla is to step into a story that’s been told, tasted, and treasured for over 125 years.

Final Thoughts
Whether you are a seasoned traveller or a sweet-toothed local, Casa Ysla Pastelería-Cafetería / Piononos is not to be missed. It stands as a testament to the idea that great food isn’t just about ingredients—it’s about memory, tradition, and heart. In an increasingly globalised world, Casa Ysla reminds us of the beauty of something deeply local, lovingly crafted, and proudly shared.

Highly recommended for those who appreciate authenticity, artisanal quality, and the simple joy of a perfect little cake.

The food was delicious but unfortunately the service was terrible in this cafe. They forgot half of our order, we fed up of waiting after 25-30 minutes (while no one came to our table even for asking if everything is ok). When we could ask the waiter again then some of our order was served (but not the full order still!!). Obviously their excuse was that the place was busy, what I understand but still you should show more care for your customers. Every item was on the bill (the ones which were never served as well), but the guy at the cashier at least was nice and we paid only for the food that we got.

Lovely clean and cool cake shop and cafe with loads of tables inside and out. The coffee is fantastic. The cafe is opposite a spectacular floodlit fountain. So as good for an evening mojito as for coffee and croissant at breakfast. I first came here three years ago and was dismayed to read since then reviews that criticised the service. So this time I opted for take away. The service was efficient and quick at 9.00am on a quiet Saturday morning in September. The cafe was by no means full but a few tables were occupied inside and outside with two waitresses serving. Everyone seemed happy and relaxed. I can imagine when it gets busy and hot the service may suffer. But do as I did and take your coffee and delicious croissants over the road to the park. Flat benches in the shade make great table tops and there are some delightfully shady and secluded spots.

The service was good. We didn't have to wait much even though our order was big and the value for money was interesting.
I recommend.

We ordered 2 tostadas and 2 coffee with my partner and they brought 1 coffee and 1 tostada.. 2 table got their food before us, but we waited 35 minutes for 1 tostada... So finally we ate it and didn't wait for the another one. Despite this situation we were not rude, but they didn't ask any apologize... It was our first experience with this place, I hope it's not happening everyday.:)

The service was bad. We didn't sit down, they already asked what do we want...I was okay, let me catch my breath,h and will check out the menu. That was not a big deal, but still.

After we ordered 2 coffee and two tostadas enteras.

They brought out one coffee...after 10 min I asked the waiter to bring the other one. After half an hour they bring the food for one person telling us like: Sorry, we forgot.."

In the end we did not want to wait again half an hour for our other tostada, so I just went in to pay...

Just a reminder it was not so much of a people there...they need to organise better...
